Fitness Fridays: Week #4

fitnessfridays_rockinrandommom

Welcome to another week of Fitness Fridays! I don’t have much to tell this week. Monday went off without a hitch. I worked out with my Xbox One because it was too frigid out to even drive. The car I’ve been borrowing since mine bit the dust, was so frozen from the below freezing temperatures that it wouldn’t start so I stayed in and did 30 minutes of Mossa Fight, 30 minutes of Mossa Power, 10 minutes of Tai Chi, and 10 minutes of Yoga. The kids are also on Winter Break and Adam spent the week at his grandparents, so no gym buddy this week.

Tuesday was very different. I woke up tired (even though I had plenty of sleep the night before) and cranky. Mother Nature is not my friend this week but I did try the Zumba workout on my Xbox and I can say that I am not a fan. Maybe it was because I was tired and moody but my body can’t move that fast. It didn’t help that while I am trying to work out, Conner decides to start throwing one of his stuffed animals around the living room. Why? Because he was bored! Needless to say, I stopped mid workout and dealt with my now attitude driven 9 year old, who I reminded in a yelling voice, “this is not the day to test me little one! I have a much bigger attitude right now than you can possibly imagine so don’t push me!”

The blond chick standing still: Yeah that was me!
The blond chick standing still: Yeah that was me!

Wednesday I really started to feel worse. I woke up coughing, a major headache and feeling the start of a chest cold coming on. I drank some orange juice but no sooner did I sit down to start blogging and Conner was bored – again! So, I stopped and despite not feeling well, I played some Call of Duty with him and then we did some dancing on my other dance game that, to me, is much more fun than Zumba. After helping him to expend some of his energy, I went back to blogging but an hour later, Conner was bored again, so I was finally able to take him out to the store just to get him out of the house for a bit. There was an unbelievable amount of traffic out so we didn’t get back until late afternoon but he was good the rest of the night so it was worth it.

Thursday I started feeling much better and had a lot of energy so I cleaned my kitchen and went grocery shopping. That was the extent of my physical activity though because by the time I got back, my headache that I had been battling all week came back and I was exhausted. So, I laid down for a bit and when I got up, I played some of my Dragon Age: Inquisition game on the Xbox. Yeah, I got lazy but while I was playing,coldandpizza_rockinrandommom my character does a lot of walking and running and a sudden thought came to me: “Imagine how many steps I could get on my Fitbit if I was doing this for real!”

Today is Friday and I am feeling really crappy today. I have another headache, my throat and chest hurts, my nose is stuffed up and I still have a mountain of laundry to do. I AM SPENT! So, I am going to spend the day lounging around the house while trying to get some laundry done!

As for nutrition, I failed miserably because as the meme says I did eat too much pizza and instead of ice cream, I had cake. Not the best choice of foods I could have eaten but there it is. Sometimes, even I have to indulge in a little junk/comfort food every now and then.

All I really want to do is crawl into bed and watch Netflix all day.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Fitness Fridays: week #3

fitnessfridays_rockinrandommom

Fitness Fridays is here with my weekly check in.

Super Bowl Sunday was fun! Adam and I watched the game together and while he was disappointed that the Patriots weren’t playing, he was still excited to eat chicken strips and french fries with his favorite root beer while enjoying the game. When we woke up on Monday morning though, we woke to a minor snow storm. I say minor because for Massachusetts, well, we’ve seen worse! There was no snow on the ground yet but school was cancelled anyway. This threw my boy off his routine a little bit.

Monday/Wednesday/Friday:

So because of the routine being thrown off and Conner being at home with us, Adam and I couldn’t go to the gym. Now, some of you may be thinking, “But Conner is 9 years old. Surely he can go to the gym and wait for you to be done, maybe even walk on the treadmill for a bit?” Wrong! Conner is not coordinated enough to operate any machinery and while I could have just given him my phone and let him play a game while waiting, he gets bored way too easily and boredom leads to shenanigans that led me to thinking all sorts of bad things, so no. The gym did not happen that day.

Monday was also supposed to be positivity day with Becky @CuddlyFairy but I failed miserably. The first part of the day went great! I got my tax refund in so I was able to buy my own Fitbit, which I am very happy about and I was able to upgrade my phone. Love my new phone! However, by the end of the day, my ex and were sitting at a light with Conner in the back when we got reared ended. The girl tried to stop but she slid. I did manage to turn that into a positive, especially for Conner, who was pretty freaked out, and said, “let’s be thankful we are alive.” The car wasn’t too badly damaged either so thank God for small wonders but I was pretty irritated and had a hard time staying in a positive frame of mind. Sorry Becky:(

Anyway, by the end of the day, we were pretty exhausted so we just chilled around the house. By Wednesday though, Adam and I were back on our routine and went to the gym after school. Here’s what we did:

fitnessfridaysgymworkout_rockinrandommom

Today will be another trip to the gym. Now that we have a steady workout plan at the gym, Adam and I will continue to push ourselves each week and see where it takes us.

Tuesday/Thursday:

These two days have consisted of dancing, Mossa Fight, and Yoga. Being a part of Domesticated Momster’s #activitytrackerchallenge has been so much more fun with my new fitbit! We have cheered each other on and just this week I have already earned two badges! I am loving my new Fitbit and am loving the weekly challenge. My Fitbit even has a sleep tracker on it so it tells me how I sleep. I always knew I was a restless sleeper but now the Fitbit tells me when I’m restless, which is helpful. Being a part of the challenge has helped me stay motivated, even when the snow has made me want to curl up in bed all day and watch Netflix.

Nutrition:

Even though Sunday I chose to bake my chicken and fries for a healthier alternative, this week I have eaten more pizza and chips than I care to admit.  I did try a new breakfast idea, bananas and peanut butter. My verdict: I’m not a fan. I like bananas and I like peanut butter, just not together, ick! I will keep trying different things though. I am also still struggling with drinking as much water as I’m supposed to drink but I am going to keep trying. Another bonus with my Fitbit is it tracks my water intake much better than any of my old apps I have used in the past. I like the set up of it. fitbit1fitnessfridays_rockinrandommom

As of yesterday, here is my what my Fitbit looks like:

Progress so far:

I haven’t lost any weight yet but that is to be expected as I just started on this routine with my son but I know both of us will start to see some positive changes soon as we have already noticed an increase in our energy levels. Next week will be a challenge though because my kids have Winter break but Adam is open to rearranging our schedule to maybe going in the mornings rather than the afternoons so stayed tuned to see how next week turns out!

Fitness Fridays: Week #2

fitnessfridays_rockinrandommom

So week two, I hit a little bit of a snag. I got busy this week with all of the running around I had to do. Monday, I had to go do my taxes. Tuesday, I had a meeting. Wednesday, I attempted to clean – and failed. Let’s just be honest, I got lazy come Wednesday but it’s not all bad. I did manage to get in a few workouts here and there.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday:

I go to the gym with my teenager. Monday was great but come Wednesday, I really didn’t want to go. Like, I tried to negotiate with my son and say, “What if we go tomorrow instead?” It was cold and pouring rain all day on and we usually walk to the gym since it’s right on the complex where I live. However, I wasn’t about to walk. When the weather is gloomy, I feel gloomy so I was being a bit lazy.

The benefit of having a child with Autism: Once he’s got a routine, which we do with the gym, he doesn’t like to deviate. In fact, if I had succeeded in convincing him to change the day, his mood would have been much worse than mine. As soon as I mentioned it, the look of disappointment on his face was enough to motivate me to agree to go to the gym. Today, though schools are cancelled due to the snow that is falling on the ground as I write this but Adam and I are still going to the gym. He didn’t let rain stop him on Wednesday, a little snow isn’t going to stop him today, LOL!

sierrabirthday_rockinrandommomTuesday and Thursday:

Tuesday I had planned on going for a hike after my meeting but it was also my niece’s 16th birthday and I forgot to send her a birthday card, so I ended up running all over town, checking every store for the right birthday card. Did you know they hardly have any 16 birthday cards and the ones they do have, for the girls, are all pink and glittery. My niece doesn’t do pink and glittery. The ones I found for boys (because I was curious): One! Just one. And it’s not even that good. The cards look like they’re meant for young kids. Come on card companies, you can do better than that!

After searching and searching, I did finally find the perfect card for my girl and I mailed it out right away. After all that though, it was time for my kids to get out of school, so I had no time for hiking. Blah! Later in the evening though, I turned on my Xbox and did some dancing. That was a lot of fun. I got to buy a few songs, including some old songs I loved to dance to back in middle school and high school.

Thursday, I spent several hours on my computer, sitting on my ass! Oh wait, I did run out to the store and I did dye my hair. Other than that, I was on Facebook most of the day, participating in blogging groups and that took up most of my day. Oh, yeah, and I published my second guest post. You can check that out HERE.

Nutrition:

I have been trying to drink more water but so far, I haven’t been able to drink more than four cups a day. However, CrossFit1this week, I don’t know what happened. I also try to eat breakfast every day because they say it’s the most important meal of the day but I am also having a hard time with that. I’m not a breakfast person, unless I’m eating breakfast at 11am. I keep track of my food intake and exercise with my Fitness Pal app on my phone but it just went to hell this week in a hand basket. I can’t even remember what I ate yesterday. I am looking into getting the FitBit because I keep hearing all sorts of great things about it.

So that’s my not-so-exciting week of fitness and nutrition. Good thing I’m going to the gym tonight before I go to a wine tasting party so that I can undo everything I did this week. LOL! This is my once-a-year outing though. I AM NOT GIVING IT UP! Happy Friday everyone! Have an awesome weekend!!

Fitness Fridays: Week #1

fitnessfridays_rockinrandommom

So Trista over at Domesticated Momster has inspired me to start a weekly check in, talking about my progress in the fitness domain. Last year, I wrote a few posts about how fitness helps me stay sane and improves my mental health. I’ve written about small exercises you can do throughout the day that don’t take up too much time using the Spartan Challenge. I’ve written about hiking and how much I love it because I’m out in nature and something about being outdoors for me is soothing to the soul. However, I ended up getting sidetracked with every day life and once school started for my kids, there was so much to do that I ended up putting fitness on the back burner.

Then came the stress of the holidays and I found myself triggered not once, but twice. My PTSD symptoms came back with a vengeance and even though I handled myself way better than I would have a year ago, it hit me that I need to get back into my fitness regime and throw my demons back into the fiery pit where they belong. But I was still lacking the motivation. It had been about four months and my energy level was low. That is, until I started reading Trista’s Workout Wednesdays and I found the motivation I needed. Thank you Trista!!!

Monday:

mossafight_rockinrandommomI told myself, “Self, stop making excuses and get your ass back in the game.” And this week, that’s exactly what I did. Monday came and I got my kids off to school then got into my workout gear, turned on my Xbox One, and went to Xbox Fitness. The first thing I did was some Tai Chi. I have mentioned this before in previous posts but I absolutely adore Tai Chi and now they have it on Xbox Fitness! I did the warm up then I went straight to my favorite fight workout, Mossa Fight. You can google it if your interested but it’s a great MMA-style workout that really gets your heart pumping and your body moving. Plus, I have a love of the marital arts so this workout is right up my alley.

But wait! I didn’t stop there. I almost did because I was tired but I wanted to push myself. So, after that 30 minute work out, I put on Mossa Power, which is weight lifting. Now, I only have dumbbells and have no interest in body building of any sort but women who weight lift can tone their bodies faster than just with a cardio workout. In fact, did you know that if you do a weight lifting workout before cardio, when you get to the cardio, you will actually burn more calories? Isn’t that awesome?!

adamatgym1_rockinrandommom

My day wasn’t done yet. When the teenager came home, we went to the gym together. He loves going to the gym. His favorite is the treadmill so we went on the treadmill for 10 minutes. I only have a half and hour from the time he gets home to the time Conner gets home to work out so we did the treadmill, the bike for 5 minutes and some more weight lifting.

Tuesday:

Man, let me tell you after Monday, I was so sore but I pushed myself to do a half hour of Tai Chi so that at least I’m getting some physical activity in. The Tai Chi did help relieve some of tension in my sore muscles.

Damn! Just...Damn!!
Damn! Just…Damn!!

Wednesday:

I Decided to do some yoga in place of the Tai Chi and then I went on to do some dancing with my game, Dance Central. I danced for about 13 minutes. I plan to step it up next week. The only downside to this game is so far, I haven’t found any songs by Maroon Five. Mmmmm, Adam Levine…I love Animals and Sugar! Those are great songs to dance to. I also went to the gym again with Adam after school, err, my son Adam, not the tattooed hotness celebrity.

Thursday:

Yesterday, I had too much going on to make time for working out but I did manage to do 30 planks and 30 crunches. One of my main goals is to tone my abs. I used to have such nice abs *she says, remembering the good ole’ days*.

Friday:

So, for some Ungodly reason, I woke up at 3am. 3AM!! I have no idea why but I threw my schedule all off so instead of doing the Xbox workout that I was planning to do, I decided to go hiking. I chose to go hiking because I have never hiked in the Winter but since the weather was decent – 38 degrees F – I wanted to challenge myself in the cold. I went for a great 1 1/2 hour hike. Now, Adam wants to go to the gym so that’s where I’m headed next but I will leave you with a song that helped get me pumped for today. The song is by Offspring but the video is one of my favorite Dragon Age tributes.

Happy Weekend All!!!

Get in Shape in 5 minutes a day

getinshape

So in my last post about fitness, I wrote about how simply changing my lifestyle to include fitness has helped improve my mood.  Here, I will talk about how five minutes a day can drastically change your mood, give you more energy throughout the day, and help you get fit.  Before I begin, let me explain to anyone following this that these exercises WILL NOT perform miracles for you.  If you are looking for a quick fix to get tone and slim down fast, this is not for you.  I’m not going to sit here and tell you how you can lose 40lbs in 30 days or some idiotic bull shit like that.  No, this is about helping your mental health and making fitness a part of your every day lifestyle.  It took me a long time to understand that making fitness a part of my life was the only way I was going to see any real results that last a lifetime.  Now that that is out of the way, here it goes.  This is also a mix of different routines that I follow and I will get more into them as I go. Here is how I get in shape in 5 minutes a day

1.  Taking my dog out at 6am is not my ideal wake up call but there is a positive (besides my dog not peeing in my apartment).  When I take my dog out, I do 30 lunges.  I am not a morning person but once I get up with the dog, I’m awake. So why not do something while the dog is doing his business?

2.  Of course, when I come in I HAVE to make my coffee!  With or without exercise, I am no good without my coffee!  While I’m waiting though, I do some stretching.  I stretch my arms, my neck, and my legs, holding each stretch for 8 counts.  Then, I do 30 planks.  That’s about 45 seconds and I am already starting to feel energized.  Coffee is done!

3.  After I’ve had my coffee (sometimes while drinking it), I do 30 crunches, 30 squats (with 8lb dumbells but that is optional), and 30 push-ups (on my knees because my upper body strength isn’t quite there yet to do a full body push-up).  This takes me about 1 1/2 minutes.

4.  After I have finished my coffee, I am now ready to do some quick yoga moves.  My favorite moves to help get me going are the Downward Dog, Upward Dog, and my absolute favorite: Warrior Pose.  I hold each one for 16 counts.  You can start with 8 counts each if 16 is too much for you.

5.  After I have done all of these I am feeling energized and ready to start my day but not quite yet.  There is still one more thing to do but it’s the most important.  EAT BREAKFAST!!!  I know, I know, easier said than done.  I’m not much of a breakfast person either but I really have found that eating breakfast, especially something high in protein and/or fiber, keeps me from binge eating in the evenings.  My favorite breakfast is cheese omelets.  I make three of them and I have another cup of coffee to go with it.  Can’t forget about the coffee!

Now, a few times a week I will work out with my Xbox Fitness.  I love doing the Mossa weights, Mossa Fight, and Mossa Groove.  I also do some power yoga, boot camps, and they recently added an awesome Tai Chi workout.  I don’t do all of these at once though.  As a busy mom, I don’t have time to do all at once plus, I don’t really want to.  So, I switch exercises.  This is great for me because it keeps me on a morning routine of working out (the best time of day for me), and keeps me from getting too bored with doing the same workout day in and day out.

While there are other things that I would like to do both for myself and for my kids (like martial arts, archery, and sports) I can’t afford those things right now so I make due with physical activity that doesn’t cost me anything.  Oh, and the 30 lunges, 30 squats, 30 planks, 30 crunches, and 30 push-ups are all a part of the Spartan 30 day challenge that you can look up HERE . If you like what you see and have fun with this, look at their webpage.  They also have a Facebook page. Check them out and don’t forget to have fun!
